Gaby Dellal’s “inspirational” psychological family drama On a Clear Day was named Best Film at the 2005 BAFTA Scotland (or Scottish BAFTA) Awards, held on Nov. 13 at the Radisson SAS Hotel in Glasgow.
On a Clear Day stars Peter Mullan as a middle-aged Glasgow engineer who suddenly finds himself out of a job. Still grieving the drowning death of one of his sons, he decides to regain his self-esteem by following in the backstrokes of Esther Williams in Dangerous When Wet: He will swim across the English Channel.
Two-time Academy Award nominee Brenda Blethyn (Secrets & Lies, 1996; Little Voice, 1998) plays his loving wife while Jamie Sives is the couple’s surviving estranged son.
On a Clear Day also earned Alex Rose the BAFTA Scotland for Best Screenplay. Among the other cast members are Jodhi May, Sean McGinley, Billy Boyd, Benedict Wong, and Ron Cook.

Other 2005 BAFTA Scotland Award winners include Best Director Annie Griffin* for the Edinburgh Festival Fringe-set ensemble black comedy Festival, which also earned Chris O’Dowd Best Actor honors for his characterization of an Irish standup comedian; and Best Actress Shirley Henderson for her portrayal of an emotionally disturbed woman attempting to uncover the fate of her missing sister in Juliet McKoen’s supernatural psychological mystery thriller Frozen.
* Annie Griffin was also the Best Debut Director at the 2005 British Independent Film Awards, while Festival earned her the Best Screenplay citation at the Stockholm Film Festival and the Dinard Festival of British Films.
