Daniel Radcliffe, Robert Pattinson among wealthiest British nationals under 30
Daniel Radcliffe, 21 next July, and Robert Pattinson, 24 next May, are two of the richest U.K. denizens under 30, according to the Sunday Times.
Thanks to the Harry Potter franchise, in 2009 Daniel Radcliffe earned £25.6 million (approx. US$39.2 million in April 2010) – more than 100 times what he received for his appearance in the first Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). Radcliffe’s total worth is currently estimated to be £42 million (approx. $64.2 million).
The report adds that Radcliffe’s fellow Harry Potter alums Emma Watson, who just turned 20, is now worth £22 million ($33.7 million), while Rupert Grint, 22 next August, is worth £20 million ($30.6 million).
Robert Pattinson, The Twilight Saga’s vampire Edward Cullen, is on the list as the 14th richest person under 30. Pattinson’s assets are supposed to total £13 million ($19.9 million). The report adds that “only a few years ago” Pattinson considered giving up acting and was none too successful at pursuing a music career.
Topping the Sunday Times list is Arthur Landon, 28, who inherited £200 million ($306 million).

Pop singer Lady Gaga, The Twilight Saga actor Robert Pattinson, mystery artist Banksy, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, filmmaker James Cameron, Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, U.S. television talk-show hostess Oprah Winfrey, Hollywood actor-tweeter Ashton Kutcher, and Nelson Mandela’s wife Graça Machel have all been included on Time magazine’s list of the world’s most influential people in 2010.
The “Heroes” section – kept apart from the “Thinkers” section – is particularly weird: Action movie performer Jet Li, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, tennis player Serena Williams, World Health Organization’s Goodwill Ambassador Liya Kebede, and Night at the Museum actor Ben Stiller, among others.
Obviously, no one in their right mind would take these things seriously. The essays about each of the Top 100 were penned by friends/fans of varying degrees of repute and ill-repute, grace and disgrace. For instance:
- Former British Prime Minister and now-and-forever political whore Tony Blair sings hosannas to Palestinian Prime Minister Salam Fayyad.
- War criminal Henry Kissinger drools over Singapore’s Lee Kuan Yew, who is credited for turning the tiny Southeast Asian city-state into a financial powerhouse. (No mention, of course, of Lee’s firm belief in stuff like curbs on personal and media freedom, and “corporal punishment,” i.e., torture.)
- Fahrenheit 9/11 filmmaker Michael Moore idealizes “left-wing” Brazilian President Luiz Inácio da Silva (a.k.a. Lula), while ignoring Lula’s pro-big-business policies, his government’s disregard for Brazil’s environment, and the myriad corruption scandals that have plagued his administration.
Robert Pattinson is the topic of The Twilight Saga: New Moon director Chris Weitz (“Rob, 23, is a reserved, bookish sort of specimen … a bit of a weirdo, frankly, in the best sense”); three-time Best Director Academy Award nominee Stephen Daldry (Billy Elliot, 2000; etc.) wrote about Elton John (“the best friend anyone could possibly hope for”); the veteran pop singer, for his part, penned the mini-essay about billionaire Ukrainian businessman Victor Pinchuk (“[he] shows his love of our planet and makes the world a better place to live”).
Keep in mind that Time – like the MTV Movie Awards and the People’s Choice Awards – allows its website visitors to vote for whom they believe is, has been, or will be “influential” this year.
There’s plenty more to the overall idiocy, which proves, once again, that Time is not – and has never been – a serious journalistic outlet.
Daniel Radcliffe to sing and dance on Broadway in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
Lastly, under-30 British magnate Daniel Radcliffe will be returning to Broadway to sing and dance in a revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. The musical is scheduled to open in spring 2011.
Radcliffe will play the ambitious young man who goes from the mailroom to the top of the corporate heap. The Pulitzer Prize-winning musical, a humorous critique of American corporate culture, features a score by Frank Loesser, and book by Abe Burrows, Jack Weinstock, and Willie Gilbert.
Rob Ashford will direct and choreograph the new production.
Robert Morse starred in the original back in 1961, and went on to reprise the role in David Swift’s 1967 film version opposite Michele Lee and Rudy Vallee.
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying was revived on Broadway in 1995, with Matthew Broderick in the lead.
Radcliffe made his Broadway debut in 2008 in a revival of Equus, in which his performance as a troubled young man reaped widespread praise. David Yates’ Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 opens Nov. 19.
‘Get Welcome to the Rileys out’ email campaign
Twilight fans have been inundating with e-mails potential Welcome to the Rileys buyers, begging them to get the rights to the Kristen Stewart vehicle in which the Twilight and The Twilight Saga: New Moon star plays a pole dancer/sex worker. Directed by Jake Scott and written by Ken Hixon, the drama also stars The Sopranos’ James Gandolfini as the young woman’s savior.
“PLEASE!! you are all amazing,” reads a Welcome2Rileys tweet sent a few hours ago, “but please stop emailing the distributors. we got the message loud and clear. please please stop[.]”
That was followed by “they can’t answer our emails because they r trying to get through all of your emails. I love you all. please stop the attack[.]”
And then: “you guys are animals!!!!!! those poor people!!! I know what they are going through when you all started emailing me… powerful[.]”
The e-mail addresses for The Weinstein Co. and Sony Pictures Classics representatives were made available at the Welcome to the Rileys IMDb forum.

Update: Welcome to the Rileys has been picked up for distribution in the United States, Mike Fleming reports at Deadline.com.
Whether or not fans’ relentless email campaign was a deciding factor in the deal is unclear, but Apparition and Sony Worldwide have acquired Scott’s low-budget drama for a reported seven figures. A fall 2010 release is planned.
Roger Ebert calls Welcome to the Rileys “an unlikely melodrama,” adding that “Gandolfini, Stewart and Leo inhabit it with persuasive performances.”
