Best Actor Oscar nominee James Earl Jones (for The Great White Hope, 1970) was a long-distance Honorary Oscar honoree; make-up artist Dick Smith, whose credits range from Who Is Harry Kellerman and Why Is He Saying Those Terrible Things About Me? and Taxi Driver to The Stepford Wives and The Sunshine Boys, however, was present at the ceremony to receive his Honorary Oscar. Oprah Winfrey was the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.
Among Ellen Barkin’s movies are Paul Newman’s Harry & Son, Jim Jarmusch’s Down by Law, Blake Edwards’ Switch, and Terry Gilliam’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
Governors Awards honorees
At the Governors Awards’ veteran actor James Earl Jones (Dr. Strangelove, The Great White Hope) was a long-distance Honorary Oscar honoree, as he’s costarring opposite fellow veteran Vanessa Redgrave in Driving Miss Daisy on the London stage. Redgrave took home the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her work in Fred Zinnemann’s Julia (1977), starring Jane Fonda.
Unlike Jones, veteran make-up artist Dick Smith was in attendance to receive his Honorary Oscar. Smith’s extensive list of credits includes William Friedkin’s The Exorcist (1973), Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather (1972) and The Godfather Part II (1974), John Schlesinger’s Marathon Man (1976), Ken Russell’s Altered States (1980), David Cronenberg’s Scanners (1981), and John Carpenter’s Starman (1984).
Oprah Winfrey, a 1985 Best Supporting Actress Academy Award nominee for Steven Spielberg’s The Color Purple – but best known as a daytime TV talk show hostess – was the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

Wood’s notable big-screen credits include Catherine Hardwicke’s Thirteen (2003), Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler (2008), and Woody Allen’s Whatever Works (2009). On television, her best-known role is that of Kate Winslet’s psycho daughter in Todd Haynes’ Mildred Pierce remake.

Born on June 13, 1943, in Horsforth, Yorkshire, England, Malcolm McDowell is best known for his vicious – later tamed and then untamed – psychopath in Stanley Kubrick’s subversive, Oscar-nominated 1971 classic A Clockwork Orange.
His favorite actor is supposed to be Best Actor Oscar winner James Cagney (Yankee Doodle Dandy, 1942); that may help to explain why the older McDowell gets, the more he resembles the Angels with Dirty Faces star.
Notable Malcolm McDowell films in the last 45 years include Lindsay Anderson’s unabashedly anti-establishment Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner If… (1968) and Tinto Brass’ notorious Caligula (1979), which features some sexually explicit post-production work.
More recent efforts include Paul Weitz’s In Good Company, in which he plays a Rupert Murdoch-like corporate monster; Will Gluck’s Easy A, starring Emma Stone; and, in a cameo as a W.C. Fields type, Michel Hazanavicius’ potential Best Picture Oscar contender The Artist, starring Jean Dujardin and Bérénice Bejo.

As is often the case at various parties and events during awards season, many of the attendees at this year’s Governors Awards were Oscar 2012 hopefuls. Examples include Shame actor Michael Fassbender and director Steve McQueen; The Help director Tate Taylor, and actresses Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer; The Descendants actress Shailene Woodley; and J. Edgar screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.
Gore Verbinski, however, has no chance of getting a Best Director Oscar nomination this year. Not only was the Johnny Depp-Penélope Cruz pairing in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides a critical bomb, but it was directed by Rob Marshall.
But wait … Verbinski’s Rango has a chance in various Academy Award categories, including Best Animated Feature. So there you go.
