EuroDocs 2008: European documentary series at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica
A series of premieres of new European documentaries is currently being presented at the American Cinematheque’s Aero Theatre in Santa Monica, California. The series runs until Wednesday, Oct. 22.
Among the series’ upcoming films are:
- Martha, Memories of a Witch (Italy), about a modern witch doing her stuff in the Sciliar Highlands
- Vienna’s Lost Daughters (Austria), a look at eight Jewish women who fled Vienna for New York City in 1938
- Return to Goree (Switzerland), a chronicle of Grammy-winning musician Youssou N’Dour’s “musical journey around the globe”
- Here’s Johnny (United Kingdom), a portrait of graphic artist Johnny Hicklenton (best known for Judge Dredd and 2000 AD) who, despite his battle with multiple sclerosis, has kept on working
- The Great Communist Bank Robbery (Romania | France), which focuses on the suspects of a 1959 Romanian National Bank robbery in Bucharest
- Full Metal Village (Germany), about a placid German town that each year is invaded by 40,000 heavy metal festivalgoers
- Pretpark (The Netherlands), a portrait of the Dutch tourism industry and a depiction of how the Dutch spend their leisure time, from Amsterdam’s Gay Pride Parade to an Elf Fantasy Fair (here’s hoping there’ll be much more Red Light District than Tulips-in-Bloom fare)
- Zuoz (Liechtenstein), Daniella Marxer’s peek inside the walls of an exclusive school for really wealthy kids (as per the synopsis below – traditionalism and conformism are the rule at the school – Zuoz sounds like a fascinating horror film)
As a plus, there will be wine and cheese receptions in between the films.
