Academy Members’ ‘Diversity’ Concerns Lead to Eclectic International Invitees

Academy members to become more ‘diverse’? More than 300 invited to join A.M.P.A.S.

Ramon Novarro Beyond Paradise

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has offered membership to 322 individuals “who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.” According to the Academy’s press release, “those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2015.”

In case all 322 potential new members say an enthusiastic Yes, that means an injection of new blood representing about 5 percent of the Academy’s current membership.

In the words of Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs (as quoted in the press release), in 2015 “our branches have recognized a more diverse and inclusive list of filmmakers and artists than ever before, and we look forward to adding their creativity, ideas and experience to our organization.”

In recent years, the Academy membership has been criticized of being too white, too male, and too old (and, in some quarters, too heterosexual) – but curiously, albeit unsurprisingly, not of being both too wealthy and based too much on Los Angeles’ Westside (Beverly Hills, Bel Air, Brentwood, Malibu, etc.).

International talent

Now, say what you will about the Academy and their Oscar picks, this year’s list of potential new members is not only remarkably eclectic but also remarkably international.

Invited talent include South Korean filmmaker Bong Joon-ho, French filmmaker François Ozon, Mauritania-born filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako, Spanish filmmaker Alex de la Iglesia, Brazilian composer Sérgio Mendes, Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson, and Finnish filmmaker Pirjo Honkasalo.

Plus Polish cinematographers Ryszard Lenczewski and Lukasz Zal; British actors Daniel Radcliffe, Dev Patel, Felicity Jones, Benedict Cumberbatch, Eddie Redmayne, and Rosamund Pike; and British filmmakers Joe Wright and Edgar Wright. And many, many more, seemingly from all nooks and crannies of the planet.

The Academy’s double invitees

In past years, every once in a (usually long) while a performer would be a double Academy Award nominee in the acting categories. Examples go all the way back to Fay Bainter (1938), Teresa Wright (1942), and Barry Fitzgerald (1944) – in addition to the likes of Jamie Foxx (2004) and Cate Blanchett (2007) earlier this century.

This year there are seven “double invitees” (noted below by an asterisk), among them filmmakers Damien Chazelle and Abderrahmane Sissako. In case they decide to join the Academy, these individuals will have to choose the invitation from one single branch.

Academy members sponsor invitees

But how does the Academy’s invitation process work?

Well, “each year, each Academy member may sponsor one candidate for membership within their branch. New member application reviews take place in the spring.”

The new members “will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.”

Next year’s applications must be received by March 24, ’16.

The 2015 Academy invitees are listed below.
