Due Date Movie Box Office: Not Another The Hangover

Due Date movie Robert Downey Jr. dogDue Date movie with Robert Downey Jr. and the dog Sonny: There’s no chance this Todd Phillips comedy will reach the box office heights of the director’s The Hangover.
  • Due Date movie box office: Reuniting The Hangover director Todd Phillips with costar Zach Galifianakis – alongside Iron Man franchise star Robert Downey Jr. – Due Date had a no-more-than-acceptable debut in the domestic market. In fact, there’s no chance this road movie comedy will be as successful as the previous Phillips-Galifianakis collaboration.

Due Date movie box office: Todd Phillips & Zach Galifianakis comedy reunion not to become another The Hangover

Ramon Novarro biography Beyond Paradise

Nov. 5–7 weekend box office (cont.): Trailing DreamWorks Animation’s 3D comedy Megamind ($46 million) at a distant second, Warner Bros.’ R-rated comedy Due Date – reuniting The Hangover director Todd Phillips with costar Zach Galifianakis, working alongside Iron Man’s Robert Downey Jr. – grossed $32.7 million from 3,355 North American (U.S. and Canada only) theaters as per final studio figures found at boxofficemojo.com.

That’s markedly below the $35-40 million take several box office pundits had been predicting and hardly a good enough figure for a comedy that cost $65 million (as always, not including marketing and distribution expenses).

For comparison’s sake: Also starring Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Heather Graham, and Justin Bartha, Warners’ The Hangover – one of last year’s major sleeper blockbusters – opened with $45 million in early June 2009, ending its run with $277.3 million domestically and $192 million internationally. Budget: A relatively modest $35 million.

$100 million within reach

Due Date will probably reach $100 million domestically, but unless a miracle happens along the way this poorly received road comedy won’t get even close to earning as much as half of The Hangover’s domestic total. Having said that … earlier this year, Adam Sandler’s widely panned Grown Ups managed to rake in $162 million in the domestic market after debuting with $40.5 million.

Besides Zach Galifianakis and two-time Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr. (Chaplin, 1992; Tropic Thunder, 2008), the Due Date cast includes Michelle Monaghan, Oscar nominee Juliette Lewis (Cape Fear, 1991), Oscar winner Jamie Foxx (Ray, 2004), Matt Walsh, RZA, Danny McBride, Mimi Kennedy, Keegan-Michael Key, and director Todd Phillips, in addition to cameos by Two and a Half Men actors Jon Cryer and Charlie Sheen.

Far behind previous Todd Phillips-Zach Galifianakis collaboration

Update: The Todd Phillips-Zach Galifianakis comedy Due Date ultimately collected $100.5 million domestically and $111.2 million (likely incomplete) internationally. Worldwide total: $211.7 million.

With the crucial assistance of the overseas market, the road comedy turned out to be modestly profitable.

Its top international territories were the United Kingdom/Ireland ($16.3 million), Germany ($13 million), Australia ($10.4 million), Russia/CIS ($7.5 million), France ($6.5 million), and Italy ($5.4 million).

Note: Japan isn’t found on Box Office Mojo’s list.

Also this past weekend, Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls opened below expectations at no. 3 on the domestic box office chart.

Budget info – which should be taken with a grain of salt – via BOM and/or other sources (e.g., the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Screen Daily, The Hollywood Reporter, Variety, Deadline.com, etc.).

Comments about Due Date and other titles being hits/profitable or flops/money-losers at the box office (see paragraph below) are based on the available data about their production budget, additional marketing and distribution expenses (as a general rule of thumb, around 50 percent of the production cost), and worldwide gross (as a general rule of thumb when it comes to the Hollywood studios, around 50–55 percent of the domestic gross and 40 percent of the international gross goes to the distributing/producing companies).

Bear in mind that data regarding rebates, domestic/international sales/pre-sales, and other credits and/or contractual details that help to alleviate/split production costs and apportion revenues are oftentimes unavailable, and that reported international grosses may be incomplete (i.e., not every territory is fully – or even partially – accounted for).

Also bear in mind that ancillary revenues (domestic/global television rights, home video sales, streaming, merchandising, etc.) can represent anywhere between 40–70 percent of a movie’s total take. However, these revenues and their apportionment are only infrequently made public.
