Aug. 8 update: The Teen Choice Awards 2011 television ratings were down 27 percent among adults in the coveted 18-49 demographic, according to preliminary results. Aired from 8 to 10 p.m. on Fox, this year’s Teen Choice Awards featured an array of youth-oriented celebrities, among them multiple-award winners Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, and The Twilight Saga: Eclipse‘s Robert Pattinson, in addition to tons of scream teens. Hosted by The Big Bang Theory‘s Kaley Cuoco, the awards ceremony averaged a 1.1 rating and 3.2 million viewers.

The Teen Choice Awards’ ratings silver lining was that the show’s viewership was up 8 percent among teenagers. In fact, it was Fox’s most watched summer program among teens according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Among the evening’s other Teen Choice Award winners were the two latest Harry Potter movies: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which has become the year’s biggest worldwide blockbuster. Also: Harry Potter‘s Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson, plus Taylor Swift, Taylor Lautner, Cameron Diaz, Ashton Kutcher, and Justin Timberlake. But the Sunday evening ratings war was won by CBS with the reality TV shows Same Name and Big Brother.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is now not only the biggest blockbuster of 2011, but also the biggest worldwide blockbuster not directed by Avatar and Titanic‘s James Cameron. That is, if you choose to ignore inflation/3D/IMAX surcharges. But inflation or no, Deathly Hallows 2 surely helped its predecessor, the aptly named Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 to top several key categories at the Teen Choice Awards 2011, held earlier this evening at Universal City’s Gibson Amphitheater.

As a result, Emma Watson – not Kristen Stewart – was the Choice Movie Actress in the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category, whilethe film itself topped the Sci-Fi/Fantasy category as well. More surprisingly, Stewart and fellow The Twilight Saga: Eclipse player Robert Pattinson lost the Choice Lip-lock Award to Watson and Daniel Radcliffe. Additionally, Deathly Hallows: Part 2 was the Choice Summer Movie, and Watson and Radcliffe were Choice Summer stars.

Eclipse, however, didn’t go home empty-handed. Taylor Lautner (not Pattinson) was Choice Movie Actor Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Kellan Lutz and Ashley Greene were Choice Scene-Stealers, and Robert Pattinson was Choice Vampire for his portrayal of Eclipse‘s fangy, lovestruck Edward Cullen. Pattinson also took home another Teen Choice Award, for Best Movie Actor (Drama) for Water for Elephants – to date 2011’s most successful “straight” (non-action/sci-fi/fantasy/adventure/thriller) drama at the domestic box office.

Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift won a whole array of awards and so did Justin Bieber, including one for his role in CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. The television series The Vampire Diaries was named Choice TV Show (Fantasy/Sci-Fi), and its stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder were named Choice TV Actress and TV Actor in the Fantasy/Sci-Fi category. Glee‘s Darren Criss was the Choice TV Breakout Star; Criss will be briefly replacing Daniel Radcliffe in How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying on Broadway early next year.

The most quoted acceptance speech was Justin Bieber’s, who said that “three years ago, I was chilling on a couch in Canada watching the Teen Choice Awards, and now I’m here. Anything is possible if you set your mind to it.” A lesson to determined couch potatoes everywhere.

The Big Bang Theory leading lady Kaley Cuoco will host the Teen Choice Awards ceremony at Universal Studios Hollywood’s Gibson Amphitheatre. [Teen Choice Awards 2011 Nominations.]
