Henry Cavill, Stephenie Meyer’s initial choice for the Twilight movies’ Edward Cullen (eventually played by Robert Pattinson), will apparently be going the Taylor Lautner route in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot Man of Steel. The above photo and a couple of others were published at Crave Online; they were taken by a reader on the British Columbia set of Man of Steel.

Much like Lautner’s Jacob Black, Cavill is seen shirtless as Clark Kent – quite a contrast in more ways than one to pictures of a fully dressed Russell Crowe circulating online a week or so ago. Crowe plays Cavill’s father in Man of Steel, a role incarnated by Marlon Brando in the 1978 Richard Donner movie starring Christopher Reeve.

Cavill also looks considerably beefier on the Man of Steel photo than he does in this shirtless picture from The Immortals. Cavill plays a different kind of superhero in that one: Theseus of Greek mythology.

Also in Zack Snyder’s Superman reboot are Diane Lane and Kevin Costner as Superman’s adoptive parents (Phyllis Thaxter and Glenn Ford in the 1978 film), Amy Adams as Lois Lane (Margot Kidder in ’78), plus Laurence Fishburne, Michael Shannon, Christopher Meloni, and Antje Traue.
