Feb. 11–13 weekend box office: Starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston, Sony Pictures’ Dennis Dugan-directed farce Just Go with It barely managed to top the North American (U.S. and Canada only) box office chart this past weekend, grossing $30.5 million from 3,548 theaters according to final studio figures found at boxofficemojo.com.
At a close no. 2, the 3D Justin Bieber concert documentary Justin Bieber: Never Say Never earned $29.5 million. Once one includes revenues from its Wednesday previews, Never Say Never has brought in $30.3 million to date.
Now, is $30.5 million a solid debut for the latest critically cudgeled Adam Sandler comedy?
Yes and no. Yes, for an average title; no, for your average lowbrow Adam Sandler comedy, especially one budgeted at a reported $80 million (as always, not including marketing and distribution expenses).
There’s no chance Just Go with It will recover its cost at the domestic box office. International prospects are iffy, as Adam Sandler is a box office draw in the United States but not so much most elsewhere. His biggest international hit to date (not accounting for inflation/currency fluctuations) is another Dennis Dugan-directed title, last year’s Grown Ups, which collected $109.4 million overseas.

Also in the Just Go with It movie cast: Best Actress Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman (The Hours, 2002), Brooklyn Decker, Nick Swardson, Bailee Madison, Griffin Gluck, Dave Mathews, Rachel Dratch, Kevin Nealon, Heidi Montag, and Minka Kelly (whose The Roommate opened last weekend), in addition to a cameo by tennis player Andy Roddick.
For the record, Just Go with It is a loose remake of Gene Saks’ 1969 hit Cactus Flower, which starred Walter Matthau as a New York City dentist, Ingrid Bergman as his (inexplicably) lovestruck assistant, and eventual Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Goldie Hawn as the dentist’s ditzy blonde girlfriend.
In the remake, these roles are played by Sandler (a Los Angeles plastic surgeon), Aniston (his manager/assistant), and Decker (his object of desire, one more akin to Bo Derek in Blake Edwards’ 10 than to Hawn in Cactus Flower). Nicole Kidman’s role – the assistant’s old sorority frenemy from college – isn’t found in the original.
Also of note, the movie Cactus Flower was based on Abe Burrows’ 1965 play of the same name, itself based on Pierre Barillet and Jean-Pierre Gredy’s French original first staged in 1964.
Biggest Adam Sandler hit internationally – but that’s not enough
Update: Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s Just Go with It ultimately collected $103 million domestically and – for an Adam Sandler flick, a record-setting (not adjusted for inflation/currency fluctuations) – $111.9 million internationally. Worldwide total: $214.9 million.
That’s undeniably a good sum but not good enough for the farce to break even at the box office.
Its top international markets were Russia/CIS ($13.2 million), Germany ($12.2 million), Brazil ($11.7 million), the United Kingdom/Ireland ($9.3 million), Australia ($9 million), Mexico ($7.5 million), and Spain ($5.7 million).
Japan and South Korea aren’t listed on Box Office Mojo.
