Golden Globes 2024: New Version Much Like the Old One

• Golden Globes 2024: As usual, there were big-name nominees, a big-studio blockbuster topping the Best Motion Picture – Drama category, a generally panned host, and an unexpected Best Screenplay winner.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Golden Globes have been replaced by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries ‘ Golden Globes, which were held on Jan. 7 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

You couldn’t tell the difference?

Don’t feel bad.

After all, the new and DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion)-improved Golden Globes – reportedly 300 journalists from 76 countries (if this keeps up, the ceremony will soon be banned in Florida) – featured the usual big-name nominees in both the Film and Television categories: Meryl Streep, Bradley Cooper, Leonardo DiCaprio, Natalie Portman, Margot Robbie, Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Selena Gomez, Matt Damon, Jennifer Lawrence, Annette Bening, Jodie Foster, Brie Larson, Joaquin Phoenix. The list goes on.

The big winner of the evening?

Universal Pictures’ blockbuster Oppenheimer, which topped five Film categories: Best Motion Picture – Drama, Best Director (Christopher Nolan), Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Cillian Murphy), Best Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.), and Best Original Score (Ludwig Göransson).

But pay close attention to the proceedings and you’ll notice that there are now six nominees per category instead of five. It shouldn’t take a math genius to realize what this means: More celebrities at the Golden Globes’ annual party.

Besides, the Globes have two new categories:

• Cinematic and Box Office Achievement*, which, one assumes, will invariably honor each year’s biggest commercial hit. (Barbie was this year’s expected winner.) So why bother with the nominations? See above.
• Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television (five of the six nominees were Netflix shows), because that’s what the world needs in these times of climate calamities, ethnic cleansing, and rising fascism. Moreover, the producers sure hope this sort of stuff will help with the Golden Globes’ sagging TV ratings.†

* This category had no less than eight nominees this year, which may sound stupidly pointless until you remember that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour was one of them and that Swift was in attendance at the Golden Globes ceremony.

† Update: The Golden Globes – now back on Sunday after 2023’s Tuesday evening broadcast – were watched by an estimated 9.4 million people in the United States. That’s an improvement over the 6.3 million who watched it in 2023; zero who watched/didn’t watch it in 2022 (there was no televised ceremony); and the 6.9 million who watched it in 2021.

Having said that, Taylor Swift and Best Stand-Up Comedy/Box Office Achievement awards or no, 9.4 million represents less than half of the pre-COVID Golden Globes audience.

Welcome surprise

Again, most of the 2024 Golden Globes’ winners were the expected names. In addition to the Oppenheimer talent, there were:

• Awards season favorite (and sentimental favorite) Lily Gladstone, named Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. (The New York Film Critics Circle’s and the National Board of Review’s Best Actress winner, Gladstone is part-Native American, an ethnicity generally neglected in American movies and at American awards ceremonies.)
• Los Angeles Film Critics Association Best Leading Performance co-winner Emma Stone†† was named Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, which also topped the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy category. Stone had previously won Best Actress – Musical or Comedy for La La Land (2016).
• National Board of Review Best Actor winner Paul Giamatti was named Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Alexander Payne’s The Holdovers. That’s Giamatti’s third win, following John Adams (Best Actor – Miniseries or TV Movie, 2008) and Barney’s Version (Best Actor – Musical or Comedy, 2010).
• Also for The Holdovers, awards season fave Da’Vine Joy Randolph was the Globes’ Best Supporting Actress.

Yet, in all fairness there was one important equitable and inclusive surprise at the Golden Globes’ otherwise by-the-book proceedings: The Best Screenplay award went not to Oppenheimer, Barbie, or Killers of the Flower Moon, but to Justine Triet’s Cannes Film Festival Palme d’Or winner Anatomy of a Fall / Anatomie d’une chute (script by Triet and Arthur Harari).

A psychological mystery drama made not in Hollywood (or Hollywoodized Britain) but in France, Anatomy of a Fall – which also topped the Golden Globes’ Best Film Not in the English Language category – stars nominee Sandra Hüller as a woman on trial for the murder of her husband (Samuel Theis). Did she really do it? Does her 11-year-old blind son (Milo Machado Graner) and/or his dog (Messi [cast as Snoop]) know who done it?

What happened to the two CB awards?

Lastly, fans of the Golden Globes’ Cecil B. DeMille Award – remember Meryl Streep delivering the best speech ever in the history of movie awards ceremonies? – and the Carol Burnett Award shouldn’t despair (at least not yet). They’re supposed to return sometime in the future.

The same, however, likely can’t be said of this year’s host, comedian Jo Koy, who was mercilessly reviled by both reviewers and ceremony attendees.
