Hong Kong Film Awards 2005: Kung Fu Hustle

  • Hong Kong Film Awards 2005: Whereas Stephen Chow’s action comedy Kung Fu Hustle was named Best Film, the Best Director and Best Screenplay awards went to Derek Yee’s crime thriller One Nite in Mongkok. Zhang Ziyi and Tony Leung Chiu-Wai topped the acting categories.

Hong Kong Film Awards 2005: Stephen Chow’s blockbuster action comedy Kung Fu Hustle named Best Picture

Stephen Chow’s blockbuster action comedy Kung Fu Hustle – not Wong Kar-Wai’s internationally acclaimed romantic drama 2046 – was the Best Film winner at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards, held on March 27.

Ramon Novarro Beyond Paradise

Set in 1930s Shanghai, Kung Fu Hustle follows a couple of petty crooks (Best Actor nominee Chow and sidekick Lam Chi-chung) eager to join a fearsome local gang.

In addition to its Best Film win, Kung Fu Hustle topped five other categories: Best Supporting Actor (Yuen Wah), Best Film Editing (Angie Lam), Best Action Choreography (Yuen Woo Ping), Best Visual Effects, and Best Sound Design.

One Nite in Mongkok is best written and best directed (but not best) film

Curiously, Stephen Chow was bypassed for Best Director and, along with collaborators Tsang Kan Cheong, Lola Huo, and Chan Man Keung, for Best Screenplay. Derek Yee was the winner in both categories for the Kowloon-set crime thriller One Nite in Mongkok, starring Hong Kong Film Award nominees Daniel Wu and Cecilia Cheung.

In other words, One Nite in Mongkok was the best directed and best written Hong Kong film of 2004. But the best Hong Kong film was Kung Fu Hustle.

Tying with Chow’s action comedy, Wong Kar-Wai’s 2046 – which happened to be an underperformer at last year’s Golden Horse Awards – also bagged six trophies: Best Actress (Zhang Ziyi), Best Actor (Tony Leung Chiu-Wai), Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, Best Art Direction, and Best Costume Design.

Immediately below are this year’s Hong Kong Film Award winners and nominees.
