SAG Awards 2012: The Help Best Cast winners Emma Stone and Chris Lowell
As cast members of Tate Taylor’s socially conscious period drama The Help, both Emma Stone and Chris Lowell took home The Actor statuettes at the 18th Screen Actors Guild Awards, held on Jan. 29 at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium.
Sharing Stone and Lowell’s Best Cast SAG Award were Viola Davis, Jessica Chastain, Bryce Dallas Howard, Octavia Spencer, Ahna O’Reilly, Mike Vogel, Allison Janney, and three Academy Award veterans: Sissy Spacek (Coal Miner’s Daughter, 1980), Mary Steenburgen (Melvin and Howard, 1980), and Cicely Tyson (Sounder, 1972).
For this year’s Oscars, Viola Davis is in the running for Best Actress while both Jessica Chastain and Octavia Spencer have been shortlisted in the Best Supporting Actress category. Spencer is expected to win, as she did at the SAG Awards. (See further below.)
Best Actress SAG Award winner Viola Davis’ strongest competitor at the Oscars is two-time winner and multiple nominee Meryl Streep (Kramer vs. Kramer, 1979; Sophie’s Choice, 1982) for her performance as right-wing British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in Phyllida Lloyd’s The Iron Lady.
The Help is also a Best Picture Oscar nominee, but director Tate Taylor was bypassed.
A little drama: Not long before the ceremony was about to begin, the Shrine Auditorium was fully evacuated, while the Red Carpet celebrity parade was temporarily halted. Security forces with bomb-sniffing dogs were reportedly brought in, and about 15 minutes later, people – after going through metal detectors – were slowly allowed back into the building.

Betty White, who turned 90 last Jan. 17, also won for Hot in Cleveland last year. Additionally, she was nominated as part of the Hot in Cleveland cast along with Jane Leeves, Wendie Malick, and Valerie Bertinelli.

At the 2012 SAG Awards, Armie Hammer was a Best Supporting Actor nominee for playing the alleged (gay, of course) lover of Leonardo DiCaprio a.k.a. FBI honcho J. Edgar Hoover in Clint Eastwood’s box office misfire J. Edgar.

Jessica Lange, American Horror Story Best Actress in a Drama Series SAG Award winner, who told the crowd that “to be an actor means everything to me.” Lange had two previous nominations: For the motion picture Blue Sky (1994) and for the TV movie Grey Gardens (2009).

Jean Dujardin beat George Clooney for Alexander Payne’s family drama The Descendants. Clooney was considered the favorite for both the SAG Awards and the Best Actor Oscar. The picture has since gotten fuzzier as far as the Academy Awards are concerned.

Meryl Streep lost to Viola Davis for her performance in Tate Taylor’s The Help. Coincidentally, Davis was featured opposite Streep in John Patrick Shanley’s Doubt (2008) – for which Streep won her first (and so far only) SAG Award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture.
Streep and Davis’ competitors this year were:
- Glenn Close as a 19th-century Irishwoman passing for a man in Rodrigo García’s Albert Nobbs.
- Tilda Swinton as the mother of a young mass murderer in Lynne Ramsay’s We Need to Talk About Kevin.
- Michelle Williams as Marilyn Monroe in Simon Curtis’ My Week with Marilyn.
Meryl Streep SAG Award nominations
Meryl Streep has been nominated for a total of 13 SAG Awards. She won for the aforementioned Doubt and, in the television categories, for Mike Nichols’ mini-series Angels in America (2003).
Streep’s other nominations were for the following feature films:
- Best Actress for Curtis Hanson’s The River Wild (1994).
- Best Actress for Clint Eastwood’s The Bridges of Madison County (1995).

Record Academy Award nominee in the acting categories
Meryl Streep has been nominated for a record 17 Academy Awards. She’s in the running this year for The Iron Lady. Previous nominations include those for:
- Mike Nichols’ Silkwood (1983), with Kurt Russell and Cher.
- Hector Babenco’s Ironweed (1987), with Jack Nicholson.
- Nichols’ Postcards from the Edge (1990), in which she plays a fictionalized version of Star Wars’ Carrie Fisher, with Shirley MacLaine as a fictionalized version of Singin’ in the Rain star Debbie Reynolds.
Streep has won two Oscars:
- Best Supporting Actress for Robert Benton’s Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), opposite Dustin Hoffman.

Dallas veterans Linda Gray, Larry Hagman, and Patrick Duffy were presenters at the 18th Screen Actors Guild Awards, which took place on Jan. 29, ’12, at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.
Created by David Jacobs, the hit TV series Dallas (1978–1991) starred Larry Hagman as J.R. Ewing, the ruthless older son of a Texan oil family headed by Jim Davis and Barbara Bel Geddes. Linda Gray was J.R.’s long-suffering vodka-imbibing wife, Sue Ellen Ewing, while Patrick Duffy played his hunky younger brother, Bobby Ewing – who is married to sultry Victoria Principal’s Pamela Barnes, member of the Ewings’ much hated Barnes clan.
Mary Tyler Moore: SAG Life Achievement Award winner.

Mary Tyler Moore was the recipient of the Screen Actors Guild’s 2012 Life Achievement Award; the award presentation took place on Jan. 29 at Los Angeles’ Shrine Auditorium. Dick Van Dyke, with whom Moore had costarred in The Dick Van Dyke Show in the early 1960s, handed her the award.
The 75-year-old Moore, who has suffered from a series of health ailments including diabetes and brain surgery to remove a benign tumor last year, looked quite frail while accepting her trophy. She was greeted by the longest standing ovation of the evening.
During her acceptance speech, she reminisced about the overabundance of actresses named Mary Moore registered with the Screen Actors Guild back in the 1950s. That’s when the newcomer decided to use her father’s middle name, Tyler, as part of her show business moniker.
Never a SAG Award nominee
Curiously, Mary Tyler Moore – whose television heyday was in the ’60s and ’70s, and whose most important film roles were in the late ’60s and early ’80s – has never been nominated for a SAG Award.
She has, however, been shortlisted for 14 Emmy Awards, eight of which for the long-running ’70s show Mary Tyler Moore (a.k.a. The Mary Tyler Moore Show, 1970–1977). To date, she has won six Emmys, three of which for her 1970s sitcom.
SAG Life Achievement Award winners
Previous SAG Life Achievement Award winners – in recent years, alternating between film and television stars – include Barbara Stanwyck, Katharine Hepburn, Robert Redford, Gregory Peck, Martha Raye, Danny Kaye, Rosalind Russell, Ralph Bellamy, Edward G. Robinson, Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward, Burt Lancaster, Audrey Hepburn, and James Garner.
Additionally, two Mary Tyler Moore alumni have already taken home the award: Edward Asner in 2001 and Betty White in 2009.

Following a series of health ailments, Moore looked quite frail while accepting her trophy. She received the longest standing ovation of the evening – twice, in fact, as people stood up to applaud her even though all they got to see the first time around were a series of samples of her long film and television career, in addition to clips showing her longtime dedication to animal welfare and to the discovery of a cure for diabetes.
Dancing with Julie Andrews, loving Elvis Presley
Among the movie clips, were bits showing Mary Tyler Moore dancing with Julie Andrews in George Roy Hill’s Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967) and, as a lovestruck nun, declaring her feelings for Elvis Presley in Change of Habit (1969). Needless to say, The Mary Tyler Moore Show was also part of the compilation, along with her Academy Award-nominated tour de force in Robert Redford’s Best Picture Oscar winner Ordinary People (1980), costarring Donald Sutherland and Timothy Hutton.
For the second standing ovation – after the clips were over – Moore was already onstage. (TV audiences never saw how she got there.) At the end of her speech, the camera remained on Moore, who seemed unsure of what to do next. In a moving display of tenderness and support, Van Dyke came over to her and gave her kiss. Then it was time to cut to commercials.

SAG Awards: Partial Golden Globes replay
In large part, the 2012 SAG Awards were a replay of the 2012 Golden Globes:
- Best Supporting Actor Christopher Plummer for Mike Mills’ Beginners.
- Best Supporting Actress Octavia Spencer for The Help.
- American Horror Story winner Jessica Lange (lead actress at the SAG Awards; supporting actress at the Golden Globes).
- The previously mentioned Kate Winslet for Mildred Pierce.
But there were several differences as well. The most dramatic was the announcement of Viola Davis (The Help) – instead of Meryl Streep (The Iron Lady) or Michelle Williams (My Week with Marilyn) – as the year’s Best Actress winner.
Ironically, while on the Red Carpet, Davis had declared, “I’m a character actress, I’m a woman of a certain color” – qualities that made it difficult for her to find good movie roles. She then added that even Best Actress Oscar winner Halle Berry (Monster’s Ball, 2001) has a hard time getting cast every now and then.
Another SAG Awards surprise was The Artist lead Jean Dujardin winning the Actor for Best Actor. True, Dujardin was reprising a similar victory at the Golden Globes – Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy – but surely The Descendants’ star George Clooney, the Golden Globe winner in the Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama category, had been the odds-on favorite at the SAG Awards.
Ensemble piece
And finally, The Help won for Best Cast. That turned out to be a surprise to those expecting Michel Hazanavicius’ The Artist – the Golden Globes’ Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and a contender backed by the awards season-savvy Weinstein Company – to top that SAG Awards category.
Yet, whereas The Artist relies heavily on Jean Dujardin’s acting abilities, The Help is truly an ensemble effort. In addition to Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer, its extensive cast includes:

Second oldest profession
Also of note, after expressing his pride in being a member of the world’s “second oldest profession,” Christopher Plummer went on to say that actors may be “wacky” and the like, but winning an award from them is like to be “lit by the Holy Grail.”
Inspired by filmmaker Mike Mills’ relationship with his own father, Beginners is the tale of a son (Ewan McGregor) who learns that his elderly father (Christopher Plummer) is gay.

Also of note, The Help contender Jessica Chastain introduced an homage of sorts to a handful of actors based outside the Los Angeles-New York axis. The series of clips featured several supporting players in movies like Contagion, which one assumes serves as evidence that … flesh-and-bone actors do exist in Arkansas, or Iowa, or something?
